We are fundraising for a small group of participants with Trek Ready Himalayas/Shake It Up Foundation Australia, travelling to Nepal to undertake a walk to the Base Camp of Mount Everest to raise awareness for Parkinson’s Disease and Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease - YOPD. We are primarily raising funds to assist in the costs of travel, equipment, accommodation, and consumables needed for the 14-day trip.
Any funds remaining after the costs above will go directly to the Shake It Up Foundation to aid research into a cure for Parkinson’s Disease.

The group comprises Sandra Gerschwitz, who has YOPD, support workers and her children to assist her throughout the journey. Sandra was diagnosed with YOPD in 2019 at the age of 45. In retrospect, Sandra had been suffering from symptoms for 5 years before her diagnosis. In her journey of learning to manage her YOPD, Sandra has taken up walking and trekking, significantly increasing her quality of life through connection with other people with Parkinson’s and the physical benefits of movement.

Parkinson’s is often perceived simply as tremors affecting the person’s physical capacity to undertake tasks, but the full scope of the disease is far more complex. Bradykinesia (slowness of movement and speed), dystonia (muscle rigidity and cramping), loss of balance, and speech difficulties are common. It also significantly affects sensory and cognitive capacities, thermoregulation, sleep, digestion, mood, and tremors (which can present as both internal and external) may be present or never even occur.

These symptoms, among many more, can be particularly debilitating for Young Onset sufferers as many are diagnosed in what should be the prime of their lives. This places added burden and pressure on their young families - and allied health - as many are unable to work and require treatment and support for a considerable portion of their lives. Rigid health and fitness routines and support are crucial to managing the disease.

As a single mother, Sandra’s children have been integral to her ongoing journey through diagnosis, treatment, and management of YOPD. She hopes that their joining her on this once-in-a-lifetime experience will highlight the impact Parkinson’s has on not just the individual but also their loved ones. Through various forms of media coverage, in partnership with Shake It Up Foundation Australia and Trek Ready Himalayas, we aspire to raise awareness of Parkinson’s and YOPD and inspire other sufferers to push beyond their perceived limitations. Anything is possible with the proper support, motivation, and hard work.

All donations will be gratefully received, and we thank you for taking the time to consider our cause today.
